Precious Little Life
I tried to be a comic book geek when I was younger, I really did. Somehow, in my misguided ways, I thought that it was a cool thing to do. I obviously watched too many American import fantasy shows when I was a kid and the subliminal waves hit me hard. I tried Superman and Spiderman and even thought that the Buffy comic book tie-ins (yes, I own these and you may borrow them if you ask politely) would get me into this magical world that my geek friends were members of. All total failures. That was until my dream boyfriend Scott arrived.
It’s probably difficult to find anyone not familiar with Scott Pilgrim since the movie came out last year. In a nutshell, Scott Pilgrim is a 23-year-old in-between-jobs Canadian and plays bass in a band. He meets the girl of his dreams and must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. This happens video game style with energy bars and oversized mallets, finally ending in the opponent turning into a bunch of coins.
Envy Adams is my tenuous link to this week’s topic. An ex-girlfriend of Scott’s, Natalie V Adams changed her name to Envy (after her initials), took over Scott’s band and cruelly broke his heart. As an added bonus, Envy Adam’s appearance is based on Emily Haines of Metric and Broken Social Scene. Amazing.
I won’t go into all six volumes of this graphic novel, suffice to say it’s incredibly easy to read and hilariously funny. If your mind won’t stretch to looking at pretty pictures, watch the movie. Some scenes are frame-to-frame taken from the novel and will be two hours well spent. It’s definitely good watching for a lazy Sunday evening.
